Amelia Coward is a British mixed media artist whose distinctive geometric artworks explore the relationships between colour, place and human connection.
Trained at Central Saint Martins and the Royal College of Art, Amelia combines her background in woven textiles and colour theory with an extraordinary collection of materials. Working from an archive of more than 40,000 original maps, she cuts and reconstructs cartographic fragments into meticulously assembled compositions, transforming borders, coastlines and place names into patterns of colour and geometry.
Maps dating back more than a century sit alongside contemporary examples, allowing fragments of different places and periods to meet within a single artwork. Through this process, Amelia explores ideas of movement, memory and belonging — creating unity from materials that were originally designed to divide and define the world around us.

Amelia Coward’s studio houses an extraordinary archive of more than 40,000 original maps, collected over 25 years and used as both material and colour palette within her work.
Maps dating back more than a century sit alongside contemporary examples, each carrying its own history of borders, place names, coastlines and territories. Amelia is drawn to the way maps divide the world through lines, markings and boundaries — and to what happens when those divisions are cut apart and reconstructed.
Through meticulous cutting, layering and assembly, fragments from different places and periods are brought together within a single composition. Movement, migration, memory and belonging all become part of the work, alongside a broader fascination with humanity’s instinct to define, divide and claim land.
A Window Into Somewhere Else
The circle has become one of Amelia’s most recognisable forms.
For her, each map dot acts as a small window into a particular place. A fragment might reveal an island, a stretch of coastline or a place name she has never encountered before, prompting questions about who lives there, what the landscape looks like and what life might be like beyond the studio.
In this way, the maps become more than raw material. They offer a means of travelling imaginatively, allowing distant places and unfamiliar landscapes to enter a practice that is otherwise intensely physical and labour intensive.
Each dot contains only a fragment of information, but together they begin to suggest something much larger: a world experienced through thousands of individual places.
Bringing the Pieces Together
Colour is central to Amelia’s work. Her training in woven textiles and colour theory informs the way each composition is constructed, with carefully balanced relationships creating rhythm, movement and unity across the surface.
This is particularly significant in her map-based works. Materials that began as records of borders and territories are reorganised through colour into something more connected.
Rainbow colour appears frequently within Amelia’s practice, carrying associations of unity, acceptance and human connection. Alongside the cartographic fragments, it creates a visual counterpoint to ideas of division, distance and belonging.
Amelia’s wider practice also incorporates hand-painted wood, vintage botanical imagery, book pages and other printed materials, but the same concerns remain: colour, repetition, geometry and the relationships created when individual pieces are brought together.
Amelia begins with a world divided into fragments. Through colour, she brings those pieces back together again.
