Barry Hilton is a British contemporary landscape artist known for his dramatic skies, richly textured foregrounds and distinctive use of colour.
Drawing inspiration from moorland, rivers, harbours and the changing British landscape, Barry is interested less in reproducing a scene exactly than in capturing its atmosphere. Vivid yellows, reds and greens contrast with deep blues, purples and storm-dark skies, creating landscapes shaped as much by memory and imagination as observation.
Central to his work is the contrast between surfaces. Smooth, finely painted skies meet heavily textured impasto foregrounds, giving his paintings remarkable depth and physical presence. It is a distinctive approach built around something Barry has explored throughout his career, the tension between light and darkness, calm and approaching storm.
