The image stayed with him. The extraordinary contrast between the brightness of the land and the darkness gathering above gradually became fundamental to his visual language.

That tension still runs through Barry's landscapes today. Light meets darkness, calm sits alongside approaching weather and vivid foregrounds stretch beneath skies that can feel peaceful one moment and almost apocalyptic the next.

Barry describes this relationship between light and dark, calm and storm as central to his work. It gives even his quietest landscapes an underlying sense that something is about to change.

Painting the Atmosphere

Barry is less interested in reproducing the literal colours of a landscape than in capturing how being there feels.

When something catches his attention, it is often the relationship between different tones that he notices first. The idea may be recorded in a photograph or sketch, or simply carried back to the studio as a memory.

Colour then becomes a means of interpretation. Vibrant yellows and reds can sit alongside deep greens, indigo blues, purples and storm-dark greys, allowing Barry to heighten the atmosphere rather than simply document what was in front of him.

His moorlands, rivers, harbours and open landscapes therefore occupy somewhere between observation and imagination — recognisable places transformed by colour, memory and mood.

Where Sky Meets Land

The contrast in Barry's paintings isn't created through colour alone. It can also be felt physically across the surface of the artwork.

His skies are characteristically smooth and finely painted, allowing subtle changes in light and atmosphere to develop across large areas of the composition. Against them, the land can be built with considerably heavier impasto, creating ridges and layers of paint that catch the surrounding light.

The result gives his landscapes a distinctive depth. A distant horizon can appear almost still while the foreground feels immediate and tactile, drawing the viewer from one surface into another.

Barry has continued to evolve his palette and subject matter throughout his career, but this fascination with light, texture and changing atmosphere remains.

It is the moment between stillness and change that makes a Barry Hilton landscape unmistakably his own.
