Fabian's Characters of the Night have become some of the most recognisable figures in his work. Women sit alone at bars, pause beside windows or disappear into shadow, while sharply dressed men inhabit a world of late-night conversations, cigarettes and wine.
There is glamour in these paintings, but also introspection. Fabian is interested in more than the appearance of a figure; he considers the space and atmosphere around them, and the emotions that might exist beneath the surface.
Darkness plays an important role. By leaving parts of the scene unseen, the viewer is given room to imagine. A painting such as Yelena at Las Brujas becomes less a portrait of one person and more a moment within a story we are invited to finish ourselves.
