Duncan MacGregor is a British contemporary artist known for vibrant coastal paintings that combine bold colour, stylised forms and a distinctive sense of movement. Sailing, the sea and changing coastal light provide much of his inspiration, but his work is about more than the view itself.
At first glance, Duncan’s paintings can appear almost minimal. Look more closely and hidden patterns, subtle details and layered narratives begin to emerge, creating the sense that there is always something else to discover.
Colour sits at the heart of his practice, balancing energy with an underlying sense of calm. Alongside his work on canvas, Duncan has also explored painting on glass, using its transparency and smooth surface to introduce another dimension to his evolving approach.
COLOUR | COAST | DISCOVERY
The More You Look, the More You See
Duncan MacGregor’s paintings can appear deceptively simple at first. Bold colour, clean forms and carefully balanced compositions create an immediate sense of clarity, but spend a little longer with the work and subtle patterns, details and narratives begin to reveal themselves.
This gradual discovery is an important part of Duncan’s approach. Rather than presenting everything at once, his paintings encourage the viewer to look again, finding small relationships between colour, shape and detail that may not have been obvious at first glance.
There is a balance between energy and stillness throughout his work. Strong colour and stylised forms give the paintings their distinctive contemporary character, while the simplicity of the composition creates an underlying sense of calm.
Colour at Sea
Sailing, the coast and the changing character of the sea provide much of the inspiration for Duncan’s work.
Rather than attempting to reproduce a coastal scene literally, he simplifies the landscape into colour, line and form. Sails, horizons, beach huts and stretches of water become part of a visual language that feels immediately recognisable while remaining highly individual.
Colour sits at the heart of these compositions. Saturated blues, reds, yellows and greens create rhythm and contrast, allowing familiar coastal subjects to take on a more graphic and contemporary quality.
The result is work that captures something of the atmosphere of the coast without becoming a conventional seascape — the movement of the water, changing light and freedom associated with being beside the sea are suggested rather than simply described.
Beyond the Canvas
Duncan’s curiosity about materials has also led him beyond traditional canvas.
He has experimented extensively with painting on glass, drawn to the transparency and smoothness of the surface and the different way it interacts with colour and light.
Working in this way introduces another layer of depth to his practice, allowing the surface itself to become part of the finished image rather than simply the material supporting it.
Whether working on canvas or glass, the same ideas remain at the heart of Duncan MacGregor’s work: strong colour, carefully simplified forms and the belief that a painting should continue to reveal something new the longer you spend with it.
