Jenni Murphy

Jenni Murphy is a British contemporary artist whose colourful, intricately detailed paintings celebrate people, places and the stories that connect them.

Working from her studio in Norwich, Jenni creates vibrant scenes filled with tiny figures enjoying life's familiar moments — swimming, travelling, gathering with friends or simply spending time together. Look more closely, however, and many of those characters aren't imagined at all.

Storytelling sits at the heart of Jenni's process. As a painting develops, she invites people to share their own memories and experiences before weaving them into the finished scene. Hairstyles, clothing and tiny personal details transform figures only centimetres tall into real individuals with stories of their own.

Every Painting Starts With a Story

For Jenni Murphy, creating a painting isn't a solitary process. Once an idea begins to take shape, she invites people to share the memories, experiences and little moments they associate with the place she is painting.

Those stories gradually find their way onto the panel. A couple might be recreating a favourite walk, friends could be sharing a picnic, while another tiny figure may represent a deeply personal memory. What begins as Jenni's idea slowly becomes a collection of real lives and shared experiences.

It's an unusual approach that means every finished painting contains far more than you can see at first glance.

    Look a Little Closer

From across the room, Jenni's paintings are joyful compositions of colour, landscape and movement. Step closer and an entirely different world begins to appear.

Tiny characters populate beaches, parks, swimming pools and woodland. Jenni pays attention to details that might seem impossibly small — hairstyles, clothing, tattoos and the individual activities taking place throughout a scene.

That sense of discovery is part of the pleasure of her work. There is always another character to find, another detail to notice and another story unfolding somewhere within the painting.

    Art Everyone Is Invited Into

There's something wonderfully democratic about Jenni's approach to art. Her paintings don't ask you to understand art history or search for complicated meanings before you can enjoy them.

Instead, they begin with something almost everyone recognises: people spending time together.

Humour, friendship, family, travel, celebration and memory all find their way into the work, creating paintings that feel immediately accessible while revealing considerably more the longer you spend with them.

And perhaps that's why Jenni's paintings connect so easily with people. They aren't simply pictures of places. They're pictures of us — the things we do, the people we share them with and the memories we make along the way.
