Danielle composes a poem — something she calls a ‘drift’ — and writes it by hand directly onto the surface. As the painting develops, those words may remain partially visible or disappear completely beneath subsequent layers, becoming an unseen part of the finished work.

Danielle describes painting as ‘silent poetry’, and that idea runs throughout her practice. Colour, gesture and texture take the place of written language, allowing emotion to be felt rather than explained.

Nature is equally important. Blossoms, waterfalls, pathways and other organic forms recur throughout her paintings, carrying ideas of hope, renewal, restoration and possibility while leaving enough space for the viewer to find their own meaning.

That balance between expression and restraint is informed by Danielle’s study of Sumi-e, the traditional Japanese art of brush painting. The influence can be seen in the confidence of her marks, her appreciation of space and her belief that every brushstroke should have purpose.

From the Earth to the Canvas

There is also a wonderfully physical side to Danielle’s process. Her paintings are built gradually through layers of colour and texture, often using materials that connect directly with the natural world.

Twigs and lichen can become painting tools, while minerals gathered during her travels have been ground into pigments. Beeswax, coal dust, diamond dust and even 24-carat gold leaf have all found their way into her work.

Travel has long been an important source of inspiration. Danielle has drawn on colours, textures and experiences from around the world, while her life on the west coast of Ireland has introduced another landscape into that visual language — Atlantic light, shifting weather and the natural drama of the coastline.

Yet for all the complexity of the process, the finished paintings rarely feel laboured. Loose brushwork, luminous colour and areas of quiet space give them a sense of spontaneity and freedom.

Beneath the colour and beauty lies something more personal: words we may never read, materials gathered from the landscape and symbols developed over a lifetime of painting.
