Award-winning artist and illustrator Jamel Akib is celebrated for his expressive paintings, where bold brushwork, vibrant colour and dynamic composition combine to create works full of movement and emotion.
Working primarily in oils, his contemporary paintings range from captivating figurative subjects and portraiture to striking wildlife, each revealing an instinctive understanding of light, atmosphere and storytelling.
Born in Leigh-on-Sea, Essex, in 1965 to English and Malaysian parents, Jamel spent much of his childhood in Sabah, North Borneo, an experience that continues to influence his appreciation of colour, culture and the natural world. Returning to England as a teenager, he went on to study illustration, graduating with a BA (Hons) in 1989 before embarking on a distinguished career as both an illustrator and fine artist.
Alongside his successful painting career, Jamel has built an international reputation as an illustrator, producing work for leading publications and organisations including National Geographic, The Observer,The Sunday Telegraph, The Economist and Oxford University Press. His illustrations have appeared on the covers of several Booker Prize shortlisted novels, earning recognition for their expressive style and exceptional technical skill.
Today, Jamel's fine art is characterised by energetic mark-making, richly layered surfaces and an intuitive approach to colour. Whether depicting the elegance of a dancer, the intensity of a portrait or the character of wildlife, each painting captures a fleeting moment with remarkable vitality, inviting the viewer to engage with both the subject and the emotion behind it.
Represented internationally and exhibited widely, Jamel continues to create from his studio in Salisbury, producing original paintings that celebrate the beauty, movement and diversity of the world around us.
