Watching People
People-watching sits at the heart of Todd White’s work. Faces, gestures, conversations and the smallest details of human behaviour can all provide the starting point for a new painting.
Todd is a compulsive observer, sketching ideas whenever they appear — sometimes on napkins or even tablecloths. He is particularly fascinated by body language and the things people reveal without necessarily intending to.
That observation gives his exaggerated characters a surprising familiarity. A sideways glance, the position of a hand or the way someone leans towards another figure can suggest attraction, confidence, suspicion or boredom.
Todd gives us the clues, but rarely the complete explanation. Much of the pleasure comes from deciding for ourselves what is really happening.
The Story Comes First
Interestingly, Todd’s paintings begin with words rather than paint.
He names a piece first, then begins imagining its characters — their faces, personalities and the story connecting them. Only when that scene is clear in his mind does the painting itself begin. Anything that doesn’t contribute to the story is left out.
His earlier career in Hollywood animation helps explain this instinctive approach to visual storytelling. Developing characters taught Todd how much personality can be communicated through posture, expression and gesture.
The result is something closer to a scene than a conventional portrait: a moment with a before and an after that we’re left to imagine.
It’s All in the Hands
Look closely at a Todd White painting and you’ll notice just how much attention he gives to hands.
Todd believes that the smallest gestures can reveal almost as much about somebody’s state of mind as their facial expression. Hands grip glasses, rest on tables, point, touch and gesture — quietly adding another layer to the relationships unfolding within the painting.
It’s characteristic of Todd’s wider approach. Beneath the elongated bodies, exaggerated faces and humour is an artist closely observing how people behave around one another.
