Artist Profile

Living in rural Hampshire provides wildlife artist Alex McGarry with daily inspiration, right on her doorstep. “Just walking out of the front door brings so much inspiration for the subjects I work with,” she says. Her first love is British wildlife—each animal, even those that appear identical, reveals unique markings and expressions up close, making every painting feel like a new experience.

While observing animals in their natural habitat is essential to Alex’s process, painting them in the moment is rarely practical. Armed with a sketchbook and camera, she captures quick impressions and fleeting movements, perfecting a visual shorthand that brings her subjects to life back in the studio. One of her favourite spots is an RSPB reserve in Wiltshire, where a disused railway line has become a peaceful sanctuary for birds and wildlife—a place she returns to often for inspiration.
